Metric – Help, I’m Alive
With a line-up hailing from Toronto, the UK, Michigan, and Texas, it is perhaps no wonder the indie act Metric should have such an eclectic style and feel. While vocalist Emily Haines and British guitarist James Shaw have operated on the New York scene since the mid-90s, rooming for two years with future members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, and TV On The Radio, their first official full-length album as Metric, Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? was released only in 2003.
With each release the band has seen its profile and popularity increase in Canada and further afield. Haines’ sweet, quiet vocals and the band’s poppy synth riffs draw comparisons to fellow Canadians Tegan and Sara, as well as to Riley Kiley, Eisley, and Broken Social Scene (of which Haines is a part-time member) but their albums’ stylistic diversity continues to set them apart. However inclusions in a Polaroid TV ad campaign and US shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and CSI: Miami have proved the commercial appeal of the band’s synth-pop approach, with catchy beats, cutting-edge sounds and soulful lyrics.
Today’s track Help I’m Alive is taken from their yet to be released fourth album, Fantasies, due out on April 14 combining the band’s signature catchy pop with Haines’ dreamlike, soft vocals, and with carefully-crafted, dynamic lyrics (“Hard to be soft, tough to be tender”), it certainly whets the appetite for the compelling album that is sure to follow. The track is this week's 'five-day favourite' single of the week on Q Radio's QPM programme. You can hear it each weeknight on the show from 6pm.
