Rogues - Not So Pretty
The Oxford English Dictionary contains entries for more than 170,000 words and when you consider the combinations available there are almost limitless possibilities for band names. A quick visit to an anagram website yielded the following possibilities if you rearranged the letters of a well-known Welsh trio, which could very easily make up the bill for an evening of indie fun at some minor festival stage: Heretic Spoons, Erection Shops, Penis Cheroots, Hectors Ponies, Poetic Noshers, Inspector Shoe, Chest Poisoner, Scone Trophies, Pooch Sentries, Portico Sheens and Echoes in Sport.
So with all these possibilities available, how is it possible to come up with something as rubbish, uninspired and pedestrian as Rogues, which is clearly a legal battle waiting to happen. You know that within a few months they will be called Rogues UK or calling themselves Rouges (as they were billed on a memo within this building, ahem) to avoid being mistaken for the numerous other acts already using that name – or variations of - including a Pogues tribute act.... Come on pull your socks up.
Shame, because the band clearly have a knack for creating likeable, dancefloor shufflers as evidenced by their debut single Not So Pretty. Hailing from Harrow & Aberystwyth, and featuring three McIntyre brothers (one of whom goes by the name Frog, quite possibly not his real name), the skinny-jeaned, curtain-fringed quintet knock out urgent guitar riffs, thumping drums, driving basslines and twinkly, wobbly synth lines to update eighties pop in an uber-glossy, radio-friendly way.
Not So Pretty is the ‘five-day favourite’ single of the week on Q Radio’s QPM show this week. You can hear it each night from 6pm from Monday to Friday on the programme hosted by Samanthi.
