Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Zero
If you were worried that Karen O might have lost her mojo after two Yeah Yeah Yeahs albums, then forthcoming single Zero will alleviate those fears. While the three-piece’s sound might have subtly shifted into more electronic/disco territory than the sweaty angular indie of yesteryear, Miss O is as seductive, sensual and sexual as ever.
Her vocals here practically drip with sex – her delivery of the refrain “can you climb…climb…climb higher?” verges, very deliberately, on the orgasmic. In fact are those squeals and squeaks genuinely from the throes of carnal delight? And with a background buzzing beat holding the whole thing together, Zero shivers like a nervous teenager about to, well, experience her/his first time.
Lyrically, it doesn’t perhaps have the depth or complexity or sheer twistedness of some of their earlier songs, but its raw physical power is undeniable. Of course, its sumptuous buzzing background beat – which shivers throughout like a nervous teenager about to experience his or her first time – is tempered by the band’s inherent New York cool.
It’s the first taster of the forthcoming new album, the oddly titled It’s Blitz!, and while it is a little different from their previous output, it’s clear they can still effortlessly combine style and substance in equal, effective measure.
