Beatles remasters and 'Rock Band' treatment

Comments

The original Beatles catalogue is to be remastered digitally for the first time, with a September onsale date announced yesterday. Apple and EMI have timed the releases to coincide with the launch of the long-awaited The Beatles: Rock Band video game from Harmonix.

All 12 albums will be issued on CD with packaging replicating the original UK release as well as expanded and rewritten liner notes and rare photos. The first versions will also come with a short documentary about each album embedded on the disc. This is the first time that the Beatles' first four albums will be released in stereo on CD.

Alongside the main albums will be a remastered version of Magical Mystery Tour and the Past Masters I and II compilations issued as a set. The whole project took four years to complete, using a combination of modern technology and vintage equipment in an endeavour to "preserve authenticity and integrity" of the original recordings.

The much-anticipated The Beatles: Rock Band could see Fab Four fans getting to try out their favourite McCartney bassline and settling those disputes about just how easy (or hard) it is to drum like Ringo. Live online now is The Beatles: Rock Band website where eager fans can sign up to receive email updates on the Beatles/Rock Band activity.

The remasters and The Beatles: Rock Band will both be in available in the UK from September 9, 2009.

There is still no movement towards Beatles' tracks being offered through iTunes, however, in spite of this from Macca in Entertainment Weekly, Feb '09: "We want it to happen, though I am not part of the negotiations, thank goodness. ...There is some gridlock." Watch this space.
