Favours For Sailors – Erode My Empire
There’ll always be room in the world for off-kilter, off-beat indie pop. The trick, of course, is to draw from Pavement’s finer moments rather than the self-indulgent sludge that Stephen Malkmus and co so often produced. Thankfully, this is something that London-based four-piece Favours For Sailors have done with Erode My Empire.
It’s a song that is almost beautiful, but which falls very deliberately short of that mark – slightly sloppy, slightly out of tune and slightly awkward, these are all things that are much harder to get right than writing a straightforward pop melody, but these guys manage it well. It’s hard to deny the Pavement influence, but there are other elements at work here too – shades of Modest Mouse (pre-Johnny Marr) and Olivia Tremor Control colour in between (and outside) the jagged, wistful lines of this song.
That said, Erode My Empire is far from inaccessible – it’s still possible to hum along. What’s more, the Englishness of the lyrics jar nicely with the American stylings of the music, turning this into something that definitely stands out. It’s off-kilter, off-beat indie pop, but off-kilter, off-beat indie pop done very well indeed.
