A documentary charting Joe Strummer's on-stage reunion and first performance with Mick Jones after 20 years, just weeks before his untimely death in December 2002 is to be screened at a tribute night to the The Clash front man.
"The Last Night London Burned" initially started as a written account of the pair's reunion and Strummer's final London gig in aid of striking firefighters, but evolved into the documentary which has previously been shown at Glastonbury Festival.
It will now be screened as part of a Joe Strummer tribute night/fundraiser for Billy Bragg's Jail Guitar Doors Project, an initiative to put guitars into prisons in memory of Joe.
Geoff Martin, who works with Bragg on the Jail Guitar Doors project is enthusiastic about the lasting impact The Clash and Strummer in particular made. “No one should ever underestimate the lasting legacy of Joe Strummer and the Clash. Joe’s spirit, energy and love of humanity is as relevant today as it ever was and that’s why we keep the flame burning bright. We expect this south London tribute night to become an annual event”.
A selection of The Clash' hits will be performed at the event by the musical headliners Night of Treason. Punky/reggae sound system Radio Clash will look after the decks at the event with a number of faces from the heydey of The Clash expected to attend.
The tribute takes place on Saturday, April 25 at the Grove Tavern, Morden Road, South Wimbledon, SW19. Tickets (£5) are available from the Grove Tavern or on 020 8543 9064.
