Ghostcat - This Is A Bust

Comments

Fronted by the feisty Ali Cat ("Hello Mrs Cat, is your Ali coming out?"), who seems set on giving Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs a run for her money, Ghostcat formed in 2006 - several years after the Toronto native had upped sticks and moved to London to model for the likes of Elle and Glamour.

Finding herself living in an "eight-bedroomed Kilburn aspiring art collective", she met fellow band members bassist Chris Massey, guitar/production whizz Dan Gamble and later, Etienne Bellot joined on drums. Their first gig - at a Halloween-cum-birthday party for a member of White Rose Movement - was memorable as much for the outfits as the raucous music. Says Dan: “Ali was dressed up as a psycho nurse, Chris was Jesus, Etienne was dressed up as a mummy and I was Kurt Cobain in a stripy shirt and blonde wig”.

From such odd beginnings, good things have sprung. Over the past year the foursome have played extensively in London becoming known for their music as well as Ali's on stage antics, There's a strong party element, both lyrically and performance-wise. “Half the time they’re joke lyrics that end up sticking because I’m lazy,” she admits. “I come up with nursery rhymes. I was never interested in making really difficult music, I wanted to make music that people could like and dance to, good-time music,” she adds.

Citing Madonna, Trevor Horn and Some Girls-era Rolling Stones as influences, they're not lacking ambition, “We wanted to make something big, that would work not just in small clubs. I’m into stadiums. I saw Madonna at Wembley at the Live Earth thing and she was 800 times better than Foo Fighters or Metallica. The whole thing was woah! Metallica come on and they’re just four guys, just guitars and drums, it doesn’t have the same impact,” says Dan.

The dirty dancefloor electronica of This Is A Bust sounds like it would work in a big venue, but a sweaty underground nightclub is probably the most appropriate place to appreciate its dirty electronica feel. The forthcoming album has been created with the team that worked with Razorlight so you might find them in a bigger venue near you soon, albeit with a parental advisory sticker given some of the lyrical content.
