Not content with a clothing range – footwear Nike Air Yeazys – and a freshly inked deal to produce his own perfume line, Kanye West is about to launch his own energy drink.
Enthusing about the product, a co-partnership with US drinks company Guru, Kanye sees it as another opportunity for creative expression: "I express myself through music, fashion, art, and design, and that's why I am excited to collaborate with Guru; because the brand values what I value, and I can put what inspires me into this new product."
And proving how far we've come from the old days when artists were limited to creative expression purely through the constrained outlets of music, we've rounded up six of the best artist-branded products to ogle. Mariah's gold-dust tanning lotion, Fiddy's condoms and Jessica Simpson's clip-on hair extension range have not made an appearance.
1) Specs appeal - Lou Reed
Developed over the course of twenty months from a prototype initially made by Lou himself, Lou's Views are "sophisticated and ironical, like a Lou Reed song". The specially developed flip-up spectacles do serve a genuine, although specialist, purpose for those amongst us who are short-sighted and don't need to have glasses on to actually read. Whether you can find them in your local Dollond and Aitchison is another matter...
2) A nice cup of milky 'Deth?
Coffee isn't normally known for it's shred-stimulating qualities, but Megadeth guitarist Dave Mustaine reckons it'll help you concentrate on your axe skills. In-between face-melting solos he's launched his own coffee range and for $21.99 a month Dave's coffee crew members will receive two 12oz bags of coffee and access to a coffee club area with coffee morning chats hosted by the man himself.
3) Remember Marilyn Manson's absinthe, Mansinthe? The 66.6 per cent proof juice was compared to sewage water by certain parties, but still won Gold in an international spirits competition last year. So there.
4) Dexter Holland from Offspring vies with Aerosmith's Joe Perry in the hot sauce wars. Dexter's Gringo Bandito is endorsed by uber-producer Bob Rock. Perry's Rock Your World isn't.
5) A cheesy tribute: Blur's Alex James loves both New Order and dairy products so much, he's named a cheese Blue Monday. Apparently it goes down very nicely with walnut and pear.
6) Try 4) and 5) with Snoop's purported 12-inch bun-length hot dog range, Snoop's Doggs. We can't find them online so we figure they may have been dropped, while they were hot...
