Thanks to Spinal Tap, the "shit sandwich" entered rock and roll folklore. But Keith Flint has revealed that as tensions within the Prodigy rose to fever pitch, he was close to making it a reality.
In an interview for Q's Cash For Questions this month, the child-frightening dancer/shouter admits: "I did come close to shitting in a sandwich and sending it to my best mate (during the recording of Always Outnumbered, Never Outgunned).
Bandmate Liam Howlett asks: "Was that me?"
"I had the bread laid out. It was Mighty White," Flint points out. "Well at least it was healthy," reasons Howlett.
In This Is Spinal Tap, the band's manager coins the phrase as he reads a review for one of their albums: "The review for Shark Sandwich was merely a two word review which simply read 'Shit Sandwich'."
Flint is certainly not the first figure from the music world to consider wreaking revenge with scatologically. Sharon Osbourne famously used to get her own back on people who had crossed her but sending them a little self-produced gift in a box. "I've done it for an awfully long time. I suppose I find it funny," she recalled.
