Scott Matthews - Fractured

Comments

Scott Matthews appeared seemingly out of nowhere in 2006 with single Elusive (later to win an Ivor Novello award for Best Song), which sounded so like Jeff Buckley that it was occasionally mistaken for a lost recording or session outtake. The comparisons were fair given the similarity of Matthews' voice and the fact the arrangement and production made the track sound like something from Buckley's seminal debut, Grace.

It would be unfair to stop there though. Whilst Matthews sounds at times deceptively like Buckley, his voice, range and delivery is better than many and in an age where Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson and co. can wear their influences so brazenly and be considered 'artists', it would be a disservice not to also recognise Matthews' obvious talent.

Starting out slowly in familiar territory Fractured builds into more of an anthemic rock sound, more mainstream at times and closer to Dave Matthews Band than anything Buckley did. Though he still has the vocal similarity, it's fair to say Scott Matthews is attempting to move on.

The Fractured EP is released May 11.
Second album Elsewhere is out on May 18.
