Pet Shop Boys: Gimme Shelter?

Comments

Shelter Shop Boys, not perhaps quite as snappy as Pet Shop Boys but that's what the band have been asked to consider changing their name to by an animal rights group.

PETA Europe (People For Ethical Treatment of Animals) a charity 'dedicated to establishing and preserving the rights of all animals' recently wrote to Chris Tenant and Neil Lowe to ask them to consider the move.

PETA are critical of what it claims are profit-driven mass breeding programmes and crampt, unnatural conditions that animals experience in many pet shops.

Whilst acknowledging the band have many fans including within their own organisation Yvonne Taylor, PETA's special project manager wrote

"By agreeing to change your name to the Rescue Shelter Boys, you would help raise awareness about the cruelty involved in the pet trade and encourage your millions of fans to consider giving a home to an abandoned or unwanted animal from an animal shelter."

Perhaps taking sympathy with some of the charitys concerns the band have declined the name change but have posted the letter on their website which they "think raises an issue worth thinking about."

Check out the letter and response in full on the Pet Shop Boys website.
