Sleepy Sun - New Age
Originally hailing from Santa Cruz but now relocated to San Francisco; the scene of many a great acid-rock freakout in the late '60s courtesy of the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane. Only just in their 20s, Sleepy Sun clearly weren't at Ken Kesey's LSD tests but listening to New Age gives you the impression they might have heard some of the soundtrack before the six of them jumped in the moving van, maybe taking a Led Zeppelin tape along for the trip to the 'big bay'.
Wailing guitar pervades the heavily drenched-sounding New Age, the trippy vocal production only adding to the general "One pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small" air of the song. The other tracks on their myspace display a broader range of styles so it'll be interesting to see what the full album serves up later in the year, the blue pill perhaps... or the red?
Album Embrace is out May 11.
The band are scheduled to play ATP Festival and a few UK dates, details on their myspace page where you can also hear New Age.
