Spinnerette - Ghetto Love

"Spinnerette isn't a band, it's me and whichever musicians I want to work with at the time" says frontwoman Brody Dalle. After the dissolution of her previous act Distillers, the ballsy singer formed her new alliance in 2007, continuing her association with guitarist Tony Bevilacqua and recruiting founding Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons and Queens Of The Stone Age bass plucker Alain Johannes.

That the first released fruit of her new act – Ghetto Love – has a remarkable kinship with the thumping precision of QOTSA is probably no mere coincidence of course. She is married to the band’s frontman Josh Homme and they have a three-year-old daughter Camille.

Her voice seems to have matured since the Distillers days – less of the rasping attitude. It’s actually a pleasure to listen to these days, although she does pepper Ghetto Love with occasional cries of ‘hur’ which sound like she is launching a ball of phlegm from the back of her throat but, erm, in a nice way. She may look vampiric but your Q correspondent once stood next to her in the breakfast queue for toast at an unremarkable hotel in Austin, Texas, and can assure you she looks just as stunning after the sun rises – hell it must have been all of 8am and she looked immaculate.

Ghetto Love features on the band’s debut album which is due for release in June.
