Unknown musician takes on big guns at Novellos

Comments

Elbow, Duffy and Coldplay have unlikely company at the most prestigious songwriting awards event this year, in the form of fellow nominee Nick Hemming.

The South London based musician, who is a warehouse worker by day has been nominated alongside a host of big name stars for an Ivor Novello award and is the first self-published artist to receive a nomination in the event's 54 year history.

Hemming, 35, is nominated for a song he wrote for his band, The Leisure Society. The Last of The Melting Snow was released as their debut single in December 2008 and was championed by Mark Radcliffe and Stuart Maconie on their radio show but was largely ignored otherwise, failing to make the Top 40 charts at the time.

Luckily for Hemming, his work gave him a couple of hours off at lunchtime so he could attend the nomination event.

The three songs nominated in the 'Best Song Musically and Lyrically' category are:

The Leisure Society - The Last of The Melting Snow
The Last Shadow Puppets - My Mistakes Were Made For You
One Day Like This - Elbow
