White Belt Yellow Tag – You’re Not Invincible

There’s presumably a reason why this duo have given their band such a weird name, but we don’t know what it is. Something to do with martial arts perhaps? What we do know is that one half of the duo is Justin Lockey, a well-known producer and former member of the now defunct experimental outfit Yourcodenameis:Milo. The other half is Craig Pilbin, who takes on the band’s vocal duties.

You’re Not Invincible is the title track of their debut EP, which was released this week on 10” vinyl – a rare sight this days. Melodic and anthemic but with a gutsy underbelly, the song floats casually on a recurring piano motif that’s overlayed with droning, squalling guitars. It’s these that lift the song off the ground, injecting it with a healthy dose of momentum and vitality and ensuring that its sweeping chorus soars high and far off into the airwaves.

While it doesn’t sound much like Yourcodenameis:Milo, the influence of Lockey’s background is certainly noticeable, as is the input of producer Chris Potter, who mixed the song for the duo. A promising start from this new outfit, who are also making it available as a download if you don’t know what a record is or how to play one.
