Elbow pull off double triumph at Novellos

Comments

Elbow today crowned their haul of awards for breakthrough album The Seldom Seen Kid with a pair of the most prestigious titles at the annual Ivor Novello Awards.

The prizes, which recognise the year’s most outstanding songwriting, honoured two singles from the album. Grounds For Divorce was named ‘best contemporary song’ and One Day Like This was judged ‘ best song musically and lyrically’. It is highly unusual for one band to win both of the main songwriting prizes.

The 54th Novello Awards – which are judged by songwriters and composers, also honoured a clutch of other stars. The Ting TingsWe Started Nothing was named ‘best album’ while Massive Attack were honoured for their ‘outstanding contribution to British music’.

Vince Clark – whose various incarnations have seen him as the driving force behind early Depeche Mode, Yazoo, The Assembly and Erasure – received the award for his ‘outstanding song collection’.

Coldplay’s Viva La Vida took the prize for best-selling British song, while Mercy by Duffy was the recipient of the award for most performed work.

Other honorary titles went to former Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins – who has had to battle back to health over recent years following a stroke four years ago – as he collected the ‘Ivors inspiration award’ and Smokey Robinson collected the ‘special international award’. Eg White was named songwriter of the year and lyricist Don Black was given the Ivors Fellowship.
