Indigo Children - Sing To Me

It would be easy to assume from the little exposure given to Indian popular music in general in the west that it there is little else between the string flourishes and tinny voices of Bollywood soundtracks and the sitars and tablas of classical tradition.

With that in mind, studio maestro John Leckie - who has of course famously polished The Stone Roses debut and Radiohead's The Bends among others - was commissioned to work with a number of Indian bands to work on a project under the umbrella of India Soundpad.

The British Council-backed experiment saw him audition a number of bands and then record tracks to be released in India and the UK, as well as taking part in a tour organised by the Barfly Group (they played The Great Escape yesterday).

The resulting eight-track EP - released this week - showcases the talent he found. Today's track is by one of the four acts he worked with Indigo Children, although frankly we could have chosen any of them.

Sing To Me kicks off in '70s dinosaur rock fashion, which might have you wondering whether you are listening to Sabbath in their pomp rather than a young act from Delhi, before softening to a slightly trippy, vaguely baggy vibe. Leckie likens them to a young Supergrass.

The project also has a great website which allows you to flick through a box of records to find the track you are after.
