Maxïmo Park will be the first band to play Glastonbury when they kick off this year's mayhem as the first band on Q's Queen's Head Stage. The Q venue opens for business on Thursday, June 25, the day before the other main stages burst into action.
The stage is located in a new position at the newly named William's Green area, which was until last year known as the Leftfield, and will feature a full bill of major and up and coming acts.
The venue has a capacity of around 1,500 but those unable to get inside will be able to watch the band on giant screens close by.
A Glastonbury spokesman said: “We are really excited about this extra special Maxïmo Park gig to kick off the festival. William’s Green is brand new for 2009, what better way to introduce festival goers to the area.”
Maxïmo Park, whose third album Quicken the Heart is released this week, will also play the Other Stage on the Saturday night. Paul Smith, lead singer of Maxïmo Park said: "Glastonbury's still a festival that takes chances, as proven by Jay-Z's triumphant appearance last year, so it's an honour for us to be the first band on, in such intimate surroundings. It's also an excuse to hang out and watch loads of brilliant music 'til we play the Other Stage on Saturday!"
Named after Michael Eavis' grandfather, the first person to plant crops at Worthy Farm, William's Green is a new destination at the festival, with two venues - The Queen's Head and the new Snug.
