Regina Spektor - Laughing With
Regina's back, with the follow up to 2006's Begin To Hope, and off the back of it's success, primed to go fully mainstream. Producers for the new album, entitled Far, again include David Kahne but also Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Maroon 5), Garret 'Jacknife' Lee (R.E.M., U2) and perhaps surprisingly ELO's frontman/Traveling Wilbury Jeff Lynne.
How this mix of big names might affect Regina's trademark dynamic and quirky sound is yet to be seen; her previous effort certainly included a lot more lush, reverb-laden production which smoothed the rougher edges and made for a more daytime radio-friendly sound, but disappointed some of the fans of her earlier work. Laughing With is the first recording to be previewed from the album and unlike alot of her previous material hasn't been tried out and arranged - or demo'ed - live.
The first bars are instantly familiar Regina territory, resounding piano chords before the vocal kicks in: "No-one laughs at God in a hospital/ No-one laughs at God in a war/No-ones laughing at God when they're starving or freezing or oh so very poor" ... a bit trite or simple perhaps, but Regina often uses this as a set-up to then flip the imagery or skewer it with a silly or meaningful phrase.
It doesn't quite happen with this track though. The closest she comes to attempting any insight is stating "God could be funny at a cocktail party/ while listening to a cook-out party theme joke" and so on. Those worried Spektor would overdo 'quirky' on this record need not fear if this is representative, but hopefully her personality and offbeat narratives will be much more evident on the rest of the record.
Single Laughing With is out now.
Album Far is released June 12.
