U2 made a surprise appearance in London last night, joining Senegalese world music artist Baaba Maal during his concert to celebrate Island Record's 50th birthday.
The band joined Maal for the encore of gig at the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire. Praising his "nobility" Bono described him as "The spark of Africa" as the band accompanied Maal on an acoustic rendition of the band's song One.
They also covered Island Record's artist Bob Marley before Bono thanked their former label whom they released all of their albums on upto and including 1997's Pop, as well as what many fans regard as their classic albums, War, The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.
The evening was part of the ongoing series of Island Life concerts showcasing the label's large and diverse back catalogue of influential artists which has included Cat Stevens, Nick Drake, John Martyn and PJ Harvey.
More recent signings include Keane, Mika and Bombay Bicycle Club. Island records also released Amy Winehouse' debut album, Frank.
