The first date of Blur's comeback tour went off without a hitch on Saturday night. Their first dates as a foursome for almost ten years started at the East Anglian Railway Museum, the same venue they played their very first gig at almost twenty years ago.
Playing to an intimate crowd of 150 at the Goods Shed, the band kicked off with their debut single She's So High before launching into Britpop anthem Girls And Boys from their cockney-esque long-player Parklife.
"It's a bit different to last time we were here" said Damon Albarn as they ripped through a set that included the original version of Country House, the pastiche fable of a businessman retiring to a country pile. The band had previously hinted at the existence of a new alternate arrangement of the song though they may be keeping that for later on the tour, along with Phil Daniels who is expected to join them to reprise his lyrical duties on Parklife.
Closing the set the band got the audience including their longtime producer Stephen Street to vote with a show of hands over whether to play Essex Dogs or Sing, closing with For Tomorrow and The Universal.
The comeback tour continues with the following dates:
June 21 - Southend Cliffs Pavillion, Southend on Sea
June 22 - Goldsmiths College, London
June 24 - Wolverhampton Civic Hall
June 25 - O2 Academy Newcastle
June 26 - Manchester MEN
