Friday - Björn Again, Gabriella Cilmi, Regina Spektor

Comments

And we’re off. Fifteen years since their first Glastonbury, Björn Again seem more like suburban porn stars than Swedish pop stars, with their blue eyeshadow, kung-fu robes and Scando-inflected innuendo (“You want for crazy time?” asks “Frida”), but with their borrowed ABBA blockbusters they can’t fail to give us lift-off. Gabriella Cilmi makes hay with others’ songs, too, ending with Whole Lotta Love and splicing Billie Jean into her own single, Sweet About Me. Our first Jacko moment.

Regina Spektor brings love from New York and knows exactly how to get us on her side: “You look fucking amazing,” she purrs, after telling us that playing here has always been her dream. Her set combines songs from Far, an album three days from release, plus crowd-pleasers Better, That Time and Samson. Blue Lips, Laughing With and Eet suggest mainstream success is beckoning. Yet she tempts fate in Après Moi: “After me, the flood.” Grrrr. Some of us are staying here all weekend…
