Friday - N*E*R*D, Fleet Foxes

Comments

Billed as the “special guests” on the Pyramid Stage, N*E*R*D probably didn’t feel too special when the plug was pulled on them for over-running their slot.

Pharrell and co arrived 25 minutes late, but made up for it with a high energy set involving a boisterous Rock Star and a sweet, soulful Sooner Or Later. The band were in full flow when the sound was unceremoniously cut during Everyone Nose, and Pharrell refused to take the hint, remaining on stage even as an Oasis song belted out of the PA and roadies shifted gear around him.

The N*E*R*D singer’s rampant ego wasn’t matched by Fleet Foxes, who admitted to being “terrified” and played a set that sorely lacked in confidence. The magic happened when they settled into those glorious harmonies – White Winter Hymnal, Ragged Wood and Mykonos seemed to tease the clouds apart, while a new song, Diminishing Returns, was a bluesy, country stomp. Somehow, though, they failed to connect with the crowd, and hopes of a potential ‘Glastonbury moment’ fizzled out. Up to Crosby, Stills & Nash to show the whippersnappers how it’s done, then.
