Gary Lightbody's Band of The Week: Week 7

Comments

Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody's self-set mission to bring you new and interesting music each week continues apace. Here's Gary's seventh installment ...

One of the things I love most about music is, if the mood takes you, you can search and be surprised every day. Every minute of every day if you’re keen enough. It’s a beautiful thing. You can’t hear it all, although Sir John Peel [sic] had a good go at it, so there is always something out there lurking that will, if uncovered, become you’re new favourite thing in a heart beat. Sometimes it hides in plain sight. Take Black Moth Super Rainbow as an example. Produced by sonic master Dave Fridmann (he who has rode the faders of Mogwai, Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and many more legends beside), on their fourth album and been around, touring and making records under one guise or another for over a decade. Not quite sure how it’s only now I’ve come across them but catching up has been a lot of fun indeed. Their new album Eating Us is a wee belter.

It is a wobbly, analogue delight that seems to occupy my perfect brain frequency. It sits just right on me. An electronic record that feels hand made and actually ‘played’ by humans. I love my dance music but for dancing to or djing out. I wouldn’t stick it on at home generally to relax but Black Moth Super Rainbow seem caught in a wonderful warp between Canada’s phenomenal Miracle Fortress, the god-like genius of Super Furry Animals and the more blissed out moments of Kieran Hebden’s Four Tet. This is music to fall in love to. Albeit a very psychedelic love perhaps. A love that may turn a wee bit Requiem For A Dream in places (Dark Bubbles) but then in the blink of an eye it turns more towards Amelie (the wonderful, wonderful Twin Of Myself). Tenuous film analogies aside this is a record to fall in love with and to. Could be a perfect summer record. Forget for about forty minutes for what mental reasons we’re having all this lovely weather and drift of into a happy/insane/delicious place for just a while, in the sunshine.

Then there is my favourite track on the record: The Sticky. All shuffling drums, sublime synths and the marvellous vocodered refrain “you and me, we’re gonna melt away like apples in the ground.” It puts me in mind of yet another film (this album is extremely visual. When I close my eyes and listen I see movie scenes and indeed scenes from my own life although my memory is shot so i remember it wrong most likely) Punch Drunk Love, PT Anderson’s other masterpiece (well everyone will go on about Magnolia but I enjoyed this one more, call me whatever you like). Visceral and disturbing love but just as valid, romantic and even beautiful in a certain light. OK maybe I’m reaching a little on this one but that’s what I saw in my mad head.

So here’s to the summer and all it brings with it: festivals, holiday romances, sand castles, beer gardens, ice creams and Black Moth Super Rainbow. Til next time, happy music times to all.
