Neil Young closed the Isle of Wight Festival last night with a wall of feedback, broken guitar strings and a big grin.
The triumphant set was the climax to a weekend which shortly before him had seen the Pixies treat the audience to over an hour of their greatest hits.
Young, left the stage after to massive applause following a version of Rockin' In The Free World delaying the end of the song several times and encouraging the audience to sing along with him only to return for a band version of Down By The River from his 1969 album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, closing with a slowed down cover of the Beatles' A Day In The Life.
Earlier, the Pixies paid tribute to Young covering Winterlong in a set that included Debaser, Here Comes Your Man, Gigantic and Where Is My Mind?.
Memories of any past tension in the band seemed completely forgotten as Kim Deal and Frank Black laughed off an aborted version of In Heaven, "You were meant to scream" said Deal, "I haven't screamed since about 1989", Black replied.

both these acts were utterly spectacular - neil young hobbled around the stage for a couple of acoustic numbers then started playing my my hey hey slightly slower than usual, lulling you into thinking he was too old to play any more, then he tore into the guitar solo like he was trying to physically assault the grim reaper himself. i'm astonished that guitar has survived since the early seventies the punishment it got.. f-ing mind blowing....
