Maximo Park rock The Queen's Head

Comments

It may be the fact that there aren’t any other bands on for close to 20 hours, but come 3.15pm a crowd has gathered for Maxïmo Park that wouldn’t shame a Pyramid Stage headliner.

(Scissor)-kicking off the festival with sharp-suited, art-rock shapes, Paul Smith (obligatory trilby in place) and company get into the spirit of things by playing a set cherry-picked by fans online, seldom heard B-side History Books nestling next to crowd-pleasers like Apply Some Pressure, Graffiti and Going Missing. Elsewhere at The Queen’s Head, offerings range from the homespun to the house-influenced, We Have Band’s hi-NRG dance pop rubbing against stirring, oak-aged folk from Q-tipped Oxford four-piece Stornoway, whose gentle songs about oceans, rocks and rain build like a North Sea storm.

Later on, 18-year-old Alessi’s Ark performs melancholy country with the maturity and emotional punch of an artist twice her age. On a more Balearic note, Golden Silvers’ wonky rush retains the charm occasionally lost on their recent debut, and Brighton’s Metronomy prime the audience for Queens of Noize with some übercool, perfectly formed electronica. The rest of the festival may lie dormant for the next 12 hours but, in this corner of the site, proceedings are very much underway.
