Plants and Animals - Lola Who?
Plants and Animals are teasing us for their new album with the Ep With/avec which is warm and intimate, an easy listen.
Trio Warren C. Spicer, Matthew “the Woodman” Woodly, and Nicolas Basque hail from Montreal and deliver a sound all their own. Their 2008 debut Parc Avenue became an international hit and lead to them opening on tour for Gnarls Barkley.
Their music is eclectic and experimental, never letting you get too comfortable with one sound. In Lola Who? the band lulls you into the chorus with calm excitement, presenting the big sound to you for a taste but never quite satiating you. Just when you believe the song is over they pull into what sounds like a new track while instead ending the song with a kick.
Plants and Animals specialise in effortlessly switching genres and keeping you on your seat, so one song isn't really enough to get a feel for their sound.

Bonus live review:
Wednesday June 3, 2009 - Luminaire, Kilburn, London
First piece of advice - Don’t expect to get too comfortable at a Plants and Animals show. Though not flawless, Plants and Animals definitely delivered in their show at Luminaire. Live, there is an electrifying energy in the music only hinted at on the cd. The moment they begin to play no-one in the audience can keep from moving; a bobbing head or tapping foot is necessary with beats that energetic.
It’s impossible to pin down this band of musicians because their sound constantly changes. Every song is bipolar in nature, with haunted moments of folk overthrown by an intense burst of pure rock. This genre-bending style is not only refreshing but completely unique. Lola Who? from the new Ep, was a well chosen opener and displays their wide range. Guru/Sinnerman with its afro inspired beat, was a definite crowd favourite in its dramatic build to the climax.
The set was equal parts old and new tracks and only met interruption from the frequent pop of Warren Spicer’s guitar strings. It’s obvious the band hasn’t totally hit their stride yet but they are definitely on their way.
All this said, if you’re given the opportunity to hear the band play, take it and embrace the smaller venues that they’re currently playing in. Their live show allows you to appreciate your favourite songs in a whole new way. Watching Plants and Animals you wonder how such an enormous sound can come out of only three musicians but just like Dinosaur Jr they somehow achieve it. The reason is talent and really good writing. This band is building their cult following and no doubt with each live show adding more to the list ...

Was at the Luminaire last night - can't believe more people haven't heard of them yet; maybe radio stations wont play their 7minute + songs.
