Michael Jackson: Q Magazine
Michael Jackson's record-breaking residency at London's O2 Arena was always destined to be the year's biggest music story, one way or another. As such, three months ago we decided to put Jackson on the cover of the issue of Q that will go on sale tomorrow and throughout the month of July, when the first batch of dates were due to take place.
Work on this issue was completed a fortnight ago and it was printed shortly thereafter. When news of Michael Jackson's death broke in the early hours of Friday morning, it was already being distributed. As such, we have had no opportunity to change any of the editorial content within the issue. Such is the risk inherent in producing a monthly magazine - that events may overtake a story that you are committed to.
If you do take offence to any part of the issue in light of Michael Jackson's tragic passing, I can only apologise on behalf of Q. Hopefully, you will understand that no offence was intended or meant.
I hope instead that Q's salute to the Thriller album within the issue stands as our tribute to Michael Jackson. It remains a remarkable work by a truly remarkable pop star. We shall not see his like again.
Paul Rees - Editor In Chief, Q

Hey Q. I completely understand that you couldn't do anything about the content of this issue in relation to the circumstances. This is the first issue that I will receive as a subscriber and I am looking to reading it! R.I.P. Michael Jackson. You will be sadly missed.

I would liked to have seen at least one of Jocko's new concerts to watch what the "new" would be.
The out pouring of support; is kind of overwhelming so all the courtroom crap did not go over too well. But does it ever if the person is different than all of you?
God Bless the Jacksons; Janet, Latoya..........I'm really sorry; the loss is being felt I think and maybe you will catch who did it?
that is my observation of it; who did it? too.
God Bless U America July 4 and etc.

Why offer a grovelling pre apology, I dont know what youve written in the mag. but you obviously believed in it before his death. Why does his death make it any any less"true"?

My newsagent this morning was astonished at the quick reaction to Jacko's death the previous day. I was feeling sorry for the magazine going to press at a time denying it coverage of, arguably, the story of the decade and was delighted that fortune had smiled on you. I showed her page 57 where the fortuitous coincidence was explained. Less fortunately for her, I bought the only copy on the shelf. Perhaps she'll order some more.

Don't worry if you get any criticism over the MJ cover - it's not your fault.

To all at Q, i along with thousands of other fans of michaels along with music fans will be buying this issue, and im sure it will be a fitting tribute to michael. I had the pleasure of meeting mj back in june 2002 when he was in london, it is a memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life. He was a inspiration to millions worldwide and the world will never see a showman and artist like him ever again. My prayers go out to his family, may you finally be a peace/rest michael jackson.

I have just read your article on MJ and find it somewhat prophetic. Well written and not at all judgemental. It praises his genius whilst recognising his weaknesses. I think it is a fitting, accurate tribute to his life and the difficulties he faced presented with fame at such an early age.

Q your apology is accepted. However I feel as though most fans like myself will bond with this issue. Simpy because it is the most recent living pic we will have of our late and beloved Michael. RIP..Love you 4ever.

I could not believe it when I saw your cover story, and the fact you were covering dead musos in that very mag. Q, I have every issue since your first in '86, I believe you are psychic.....lol, Bozo.

I've read your comments apologizing for the content of the interview, however the cover photography is appalling. It gives on first impression that the article was never intended to be flattering in any way whatsoever.

Will this amount of grief be shown to Gary Glitter when he goes?

In all honesty, I think the tragic thing is that the media and negative publicity is what killed him. Everyone loves a bit of negative gossip. It's a shame that he was treated so badly by the press when it was obvious he was in no mental fit state due to the pressures of show business. All the press wanted to do was find a flaw in him as a human being and now all the press will say how great he is due to selling more magazines and newspapers. I was never a big fan but I believe he was a genius I sung every song he released and felt compassion for him when he was slated by everyone. It's a shame he was exploited by his father and the media to make millions!! Long live the legend of Michael Jackson and remember that fame and money doesn't alway's bring happiness!! RIP

An incredibly prophetic issue, which i think will be looked upon as such, rather than any offence taken.
The words have new tragic meaning now that will set this months Q apart from the dozens of other Jacko related magazine articles.
Especially crazy is the article that follows just a few pages later - Rock Star Deaths.
Anyway, to all at Q, keep up the excellent work. The magazine has improved vastly over the past few months.

You thought the cover story was prophetic, have a look at p25 of Q275, 2 months ago (Can Jacko last 50 dates?) It perfectly outlined the circumstances leading up to his demise, albeit ironically.

Q, the timing of this issue is unbelievable. Almost a death mask on the cover. No need for an apology by Paul. I am more covinced than ever, after reading your piece on the 4 years prior to the 02 announcements, that Jacko may have called it a day himself.
He was never going to pull these gigs off!! As for another lawsuit !! it would be enough for anyone to do a Reggie Perrin or worse !!
As usual Q you have put together a great piece.

Interesting cover - I saw it today at the newsagent. If this was anyone else wouldn't you have photoshopped out the scab of peeling skin on the end of his nose and the clearly visible weave from his wig? Strange.

These comments about a pre-apology say that Q has a low integrity. If you are always worried about offending people, do you ever say what you actually think? Or only what people want to hear?

to be honest i thought the caricature in june issue was more prophetic ...the heart specialists comments about the strain mj putting on the o2 shows on his heart..just like paul rees said its the risk you take putting out a magazine of this quality..sad he's gone but the legacy will live on forever with his extensive calalogue...R.I.P. MJ

I was at Glastonbury, and the first thing I saw, flicking through the free programme, was the advert for this, and I thought it was tragic timing but also great timing, if you see what I mean.

Hi Q Magazine! Don!t worry. You couln't know about the tragedy. It's so sad, that Michael Jackson cannot show us his new power, to appear in his new show. "This is it"unfortunatly so true. I think, we must be gratful, to knew him. Michael, have peace wherever you are now.

Dennis Dunn, I have read and re-read your comments (so good you sent them twice) But I still cannot make sense out of them. Although I admit I enjoyed them immensely: "God Bless the Jacksons: Janet, Latoya..".err..and the others...? Matt Luke & Ken perhaps? And Who the hell is Jocko? It's OK, you are overwhelmed. I see that now.

I think it's testimony to his superstardom that he had made the front page of your mag this month, regardless of what has now happened. Magazines and publications who have treated him so appallingly in the last 20 years are so hypocritical that it takes his death to get him on the cover. Some of the content is unfortunate, and the CSI teaser on the front - but how could you have known? AS JH says below, the lead article really a fantastic piece, all things considered and as you hoped, the Thriller salute is entirely fitting. And I certainly don't think that this acknowledgement from Paul Rees certainly isn't a grovelling show of lack of integrity as some below have suggested. If anything, it's the total opposite. Thanks, Paul.

While I nobody could complain that Q had a MJ issue launching / just about to launch when he died, and there's certainly nothing wrong with Paul Rees's statement above, am I the only one who thinks it's pretty cynical that this years Q Glastonbury review, published after the death, is marketting this edition of Q as a tribute issue, on a black page with 1958-2009 at the top? It's not even accurate marketting, and isn't such a long way from the 'tout'ing mentioned on this site.

Michael Jackson's own actions and "off the wall" lifestyle was news worthy and open for media disection and I personally have alway appreciated Q's reporting and humour on Jackson's unique and often misguided projects and behaviour.
I dont think Q's intrinsic philosophy is to cause malice or have any necro sadist humiliation of any " star "
Just add photos of Fergie in varying stages of undress ( of Black eyed peas , not the Dutchess ) in your next issue and all will be forgiven.

I wish all you so called fans would stop referring to Michael as Jacko. It is NOT a term of affection. It's just half of the derogatory name Wacko Jacko that the cold hearted and vile media labeled him.
He didn't like it, and neither do I. If you were true fans you'd know that it was offensive to him.

I just saw the cover and thought it was yet another tribute, yet quite amazed when I read the mag and saw it was printed before his death. Some of the comments in this and the other recent edition were quite prophetic and this is a fitting tribute to a brilliant, flawed genius (R.I.P.)...
