Ethereal Icelandic noise-makers Sigur Rós have chalked up another success. The band who are currently celebrating the ten year anniversary of the release of their second album Agætis Byrjun have competed and won on a television game show.
The Icelandic quiz show, Popppunktur in which two bands compete head-to-head answering questions about pop music saw them take on 80s pop band áhöfnin á halastjörnunni (no, we hadn't heard of them either!).
The opponents were no match for collective musical brain of Sigur Rós as they triumphed 31 - 15 answering questions on subjects as diverse as the Dolly Parton, the Manic Street Preachers, Eurovision, Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra and Simply Red.
The show also tested band member Kjartan's athletic prowess as he made a "surprisingly impressive" long jump earning the band easier questions; their musical talents were also called into play as they had to perform an impromptu version of an old song by folk-pop singer Bubbi Morthens.
Having successfully made it through to the next round the band will appear again in the Popppunktur semi-finals later in the summer. Other Icelandic bands competing this season include Múm, Fm Belfast and Sprengjuhöllin.
The whole show is available to view via the Sigur Rós website, though you'll have to brush up on your Icelandic...
We're hoping this catches on and we'll be seeing more op stars on our mainstream telly shows... Pete Doherty on Can't Cook, Won't Cook? Johnny Borrell following Dizzee Rascal onto Newsnight perhaps?
