Carey apologises for memorial performance

Comments

Mariah Carey has apologised for her performance at Michael Jackson's memorial, which left her barely audible in parts.

Mariah performed the Jackson 5 track I'll Be There at the memorial service at Staples Center, LA, but relied on collaborator Trey Lorenz to help her through the middle part of the song.

Posting on her twitter account following the performance she explained:

"Trying to sing today was basically impossible for me. I could barely keep myself from crying. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to pull it together and really do it right, but I was literally choked up when I saw him there in front of me. One thing I know is, we will never really have to say goodbye to MJ. His legacy lives on through his music and the millions of people he inspired with his timeless music. He will be forever in our hearts."

Other performers at the tribute included Usher, Stevie Wonder and Jennifer Hudson, with them and many others paying tribute to the late singer.

Musical tributes

Diana Ross
"I'm trying to find closure, I want you to know that even though I am not there at the Staples Center I am there in my heart. I've decided to pause and be silent. This feels right for me.

"Michael was a personal love of mine, a treasured part of my world, part of the fabric of my life in a way that I can't seem to find words to express."

Smokey Robinson
"You don't think you'll live to see them gone... He is going to live forever and ever and ever and ever."

Berry Gordy, Motown Records founder (signed the Jackson 5).
"Michael Jackson went into orbit and never came down. Though it ended way too soon, Michael's life was beautiful.

"Sure there was some sad times and maybe some questionable decisions on his part, but Michael Jackson accomplished everything he dreamed of."

Stevie Wonder

"This is a moment that I wish that I didn't live to see come.

"But as much as I can say that and mean it, I do know that God is good and I do know that as much as we may feel - and we do - that we need Michael here with us, God must have needed him far more."

Appearing openly in public for the first time, Jackson's children all took part in the memorial with perhaps the simplest and most heart-wrenching tribute of the night being made by Jackson's daughter, Paris aged 11, reminding fans and non-fans alike that the icon-like superstar was also a family man and beloved father of three children.

"I just wanted to say, ever since I was born, daddy has been the best father you can ever imagine. And I just wanted to say I love him so much."

  • Carey's excuse is lame. She is suppose to be professional regardless. This was a contribute to the King of Pop! Her excuse is totally weak and I don't believe one word she says. She's seems to be really troubled and weird anyway. I hope Whitney Houston make a huge come back on her up and coming album and totally sit Carey down forever.

  • It wasn't a squeeky clean performance but I actually found it fitting to how that day went. Watching her performance replayed on youtube completely takes it out of context.

I don't think anyone knew if it was supposed to be a 'celebration of' or a memorial, the crowd silence at the start of the proceedings seemed to last forever, and Mariah was the first singer up infront of his casket. i thought she was with the crowd and completely in the moment when she sang, rather than focusing on what was rehearsed and wearing a crap fake smile
