In their own words... Nouvelle Vague

Comments

Those post-punk popsters Nouvelle Vague are back. Picking up where previous albums Nouvelle Vague and Bande à Part left-off French producer's Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux's project have a slight format change in store for NV3 - some of the original artists have collaborated on covers of their own material, including Ian McCulloch (Echo & the Bunnymen), Terry Hall (The Specials), Barry Adamson (Magazine) and Martin Gore (Depeche Mode).

We put finger to keyboard to get them to pick and talk to us about five tracks from their expanding catalogue, including a preview of a couple of new ones.

So here they are, Nouvelle Vague in their own words...

Love Will Tear Us Apart

Well, Nouvelle Vague started on a simple and crazy idea. Try a cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart in bossa nova. It's the first cover we ever recorded, and it happened to be the first track of our first album. We didn't know what would be the reactions at this time - actually we were thinking that our stuff would be heard by 400 people max. All I can tell you is that each time we have played this song live, there was an angel floating in the venue.

Teenage Kicks

We had to cover Teenage Kicks. How could we start a project in covering punk and new wave songs without picking this one? This John Peel's all time favourite is a classic, forever. It résumés all teenage fever, which has always been the purpose of rock and roll.

All My Colours featuring Ian McCulloch

This one is on our last album. We could have picked Bring On The Dancing Horses - Mac did suggest this one actually -, but we were a bit more keen and inspired by All My Colours, whose original version has always been a must in our ears. We simply love our version, as Mac gifted us by singing on it, which is a tremendous honour for us.

Master and Servant featuring Martin Gore

Again, our new album welcomes some of our "forever great brothers" in music. We sent this version to Martin Gore's management back in spring 2008. We were told that Martin had a great laugh when he heard it! So he agreed in singing some backing vocals on it, and he did that while Depeche Mode was recording their new album! I mean, isn't that a beautiful gift?

Parade featuring Barry Adamson

Well, our new album is not just made up of guest appearances (we only contacted a few people), but as we are talking to Q, we feel like talking about great British people. Let's take Magazine, one of our favourite new wave bands in all of the 80s era. Since the beginning of Nouvelle Vague, we wanted to cover a Magazine song, but it took quite a while to pick up the right one. We sent our version of Parade to Barry Adamson, whom we had followed all solo work since Magazine. Barry was happy with it and, as Mac did, he came to our studio to perform a duet with Nadeah. Fantastic version, in our opinion...
