Band On The Run: Our First Update
What have we been up to? Hmmm... Well I guess I should start with our "time off" in our hometown, Portland, Oregon (U.S.A.). We've basically been on the road since December so to be back in Portland with our friends and our bikes was nutso.
We spent the days in our rehearsal space drinking coconut water and trying to get ready for our first ever headline tour of the UK and Europe (scary). It's funny: the closer you get to being good, the farther away you realize you are.
After rehearsals we biked to bars or pizza parlors to catch up with friends and maybe see their bands. Oh yeah, and Portland was having the worst heat wave of the last 25 years so clothing was optional for all of this. I don't think it gets any better than riding your bike on a hot summer night in Portland for a few IPAs with good friends and pals.
After Portland, we headed to Chicago for Lollapalooza, which we were very stoked about. Maybe we shouldn't have been. We were the first band of the festival, playing at 11:30 am. We were ok with that (for some reason there was a lot of people).
During soundcheck, it started raining. We were ok with that too (we're from Portland remember). Then we started our set only to realize that none of the on-stage speakers were turned on. From there on, it spiraled into a nightmare. We were playing an awful awful show until all the power cut out in the middle of the third song. We could have stormed off stage but then everyone would have probably just left so we paced around on-stage for a good 10 minutes in fear and confusion.
Benny and I had a little acoustic drum circle jam (hippies unite!). A few people liked that. Then I ran backstage to our dressing room to grab as many beers as I possibly could, and ran out hurling them into the audience. Everyone liked that. (This sort of shenanigans ensued until the power came back on. Everyone got really excited and we began playing another song.
Then the power cut out again. We stormed offstage and everyone left. Thanks Lollapalooza. The audience was really awesome though and we had a great rest of the day seeing awesome bands. Brian got to be side-stage for the Kings of Leon show that night so I think he can die happy now. Next up, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, and finally The UK!
More Q exclusives (including audio and video) coming up over the next few weeks from Hockey as they get set to arrive in the U.K.
