Q's Festival Fives: Dananananakyroyd

Comments

Paul and Callum from Scottish noise-poppers Dananananakyroyd.

5 bands we love at the moment:
Callum: Dutch Uncle, epic Manchester band - they sound like King Crimson, if King Crimson did pop, which King Crimson did in the 80s. Little Kid - a twee indie band from Australia.

Paul: I saw a band called Sparrow In The Workshop from Glasgow - American singer, Scottish drummer, Welsh bassist. They make deathy, folky music but not the boring kind.

Callum: Conscientious Objectors - a very little known grindcore band from Aberdeen. It's my other band. We've got an album's worth of material...it's fifteen minutes long. It's s**t, we're horrible and sing songs about girls we used to go out with. It's like relationship-core.

Paul: The best band I saw this year was Devo. Seeing Devo was a personal highlight. They changed their outfits every six or seven songs. We could do a whole feature on bands we loved at SXSW.

4 things you always take on tour:
Callum: Our laptops are very important

Paul: It's computer world in our van.

Callum: There's only so much time you can spend talking to each other.

Paul: I always have a copy of Four Four Two. It's my favourite publication. It's an intelligent magazine about football. It's the best written magazine that exists.

Callum: I always try and take a couple of books but I never read them. I'm not reading JG Ballard's Empire Of The Sun at the moment. I have seen the film though.

Paul: Throat Coat! Callum and John need something to dull the pain...

Callum: ...of being absolute a**eholes and screaming on stage every night.

Paul: It fixes your voice and gets rid of the darkness.

Callum: The first time I heard about it when I was very young, I heard about it in a Kerrang! feature with Coby Dick from Papa Roach

[The pair break into a frighteningly good acapella rendition of Last Resort by Papa Roach]

Callum: That was a Nu-metal homage.

3 things that annoy you about festivals:

Paul: Flags! That's a very good thing that they've been banned.

Callum: Flags, especially when you're watching on TV. You couldn't be more pissed off because you're not there and you can't see the band because some dick's waving a flag that says "I'm in HIGH SCHOOL"

Paul: Or "I love sausages".

Callum: The lack of 3G. I'm trying to update my Twitter!

Paul: 40-year-olds at festivals. 'Aye, doll, I got the early bird ticket. I'm here to see Doves. We brought the kids and the dogs.' All they want to see is Doves and Editors and they've got a big Laura Ashley frock on. I won't be in a band when I'm 40.

Callum: The third one is - other bands. I think festivals should all be one band. We'd do the dance tent, we'd DJ, the acoustic stage. It'd be an exercise in futility. I'm going to do a set in the comedy tent about my penis and how small it is compared to everyone else's.

2 great things Dananananakyroyd have done this year:
Callum: We went to Australia.

Paul: We're proper famous in Australia. I swear to God. We get played four or five times a day on mainstream radio.

Callum: Few Australian bands make it out of Australia. For us to go there and penetrate it.

Paul: It was consensual.

Callum: The first thing that happened was, we got off the plane and the baggage handler said: "You guys are in Dananananakroyd.

Paul: The other great thing was SXSW. We played four shows in two days and it was Callum's first time in the States.

Callum: When industry wankers get drunk enough, they're just like everyone else.

One bit of festival advice:
Callum: Be in a band!

Paul: Don't go to festivals as a punter. OK...that's terrible advice. Bring wellies?

Callum: That's rubbish.

Paul: Don't come dressed as the Flintstones. I can't imagine what conversation happened where someone thought that was a good idea.

Callum: I think the conversation went: "Wilma!"

Paul: Maybe it's a weird sexual thing...
