Q's Festival Fives: White Lies

Comments

The surprisingly perky indie doom poppers tell us their favourite bands this year so far, their DIY tour documentary, appearing on Letterman and how some bands can be "douches" at festivals.

5 bands we love right now:
Harry: Them Crooked Vultures, it was amazing to see three rock heavyweights on stage at the same time.

Charles: Fever Ray is an artist we've all been in to and caught about four songs of at Oxegen. She was the one artist I wanted to see. Despite playing the same festivals as her all weekend, it hasn't worked out apart from them.

Jack: The first band I saw today - Dinosaur Pile-Up. They were brilliant. I'd never seen them live. It was pretty full on for the first band of the day.

Harry: We were allowed the honour of standing side of stage for Kings Of Leon at a festival in Sweden. Fantastic show. We have a lot of love for that band and we're touring with them later in the year.

Jack: Grace Jones - her live show is amazing. She hula-hooped for 6 minutes while singing. She's getting better as time goes on.

4 things we take on tour:
Charles: Our laptops provide 90% of the entertainment on tour. I've been learning to edit film stuff on Final Cut. I'm making a tour documentary.

Harry: He's a documentary film maker. It's going to be like every other tour documentary. Lots of pictures of us on buses asleep.

Charles: It's more than that. There's an aquarium!

Harry: iPod is a big given but it is absolutely essential.

Charles: Toothbrush - it's something that can be overlooked. Sometimes I don't bring it if we're away for a couple of days. Then I wake up and instantly regret it. But then I just buy a new one. £1.70, that's how well we're doing. Sometimes I'll even buy one of those battery operated ones.

Jack: And if there's a penny change, we'll leave it with the cashier, we just don't even worry about that these days. [laughs]

Charles: I would say more clothes than you'd ever think you'll need.

Harry: Especially boxers.

Charles: You smell so bad, so quickly on a tour bus.

Jack: No one will frown on you for changing you boxers and socks twice in one day.

Charles: But twice in three weeks...

3 things we hate about festivals
Harry: The fact that in every single mens' loos there's always just one cubicle and you have to wait.

Jack: All of the people who are wacky. The "free hug" people. I just saw a guy in a full lycra suit - what are you? You've not improved my festival and you're probably having a bad time yourself because it's sweaty in there and you can't see or breath.

Charles: Closed stages - bands stopping other artists watching them from side-stage. It happens a lot. Don't be a douche.

2 amazing things that have happened this year:
Harry: One was when we did our May headline tour, it was the first one since the album came out. It was a really emotional experience.

Charles: David Letterman was a pretty good high point. We haven't really had massive shows in the US yet so to be given the opportunity to do David Letterman was fantastic. We organised thousands of rose petals to fall on us during the end of the performance. He came over and said to his band leader guy Paul, 'How 'bout that Paul?' and then he goes 'You know you guys are cleaning this up.' So we got a joke.

Jack: In fact, Letterman performance was good but Letterman joke on White Lies behalf was the highlight.

1 festival tip:
Harry: I always say the same thing - don't get really pissed on the first night. It's a waste. Spread it out and take it easy. If anything wait to the Sunday.

Charles: I say Saturday night is the mash-up night...
