The world's most amiable dance record producing vegan is back, and he comes bearing treats.
Whilst never seeming particularly enamoured with his fame or celebrity since 1999's worldwide smash, Play, he's positively shunned it and taken an almost home-made approach for his new album. Gone are the large budget productions with big name guest vocals and even the expensive photo-shoot and graphic designers for Wait For Me, he recorded at home and designed the artwork himself.
What's inspired this DIY approach? Well film-maker David Lynch speaking at the BAFTA's in 2008, that's what. "At that moment, I decided to just make records that were more personal," Moby explains, "maybe more experimental, and a little more challenging, maybe not as easy to like, but things that I found to be artistically and creatively more satisfying. That was the idea behind making the new album."
Recorded in his bedroom then mixed with legendary producer and "crazy punk rocker" Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, Wire, Hope Of The States) the album is a departure from his recent output harking back to his punk roots (He was once a hardcore punk band called Vatican Commandos).
In keeping with this, Mistake pays homage to punk and post-punk Joy Division and Echo & The Bunnymen.

Whatever the style, the sound, the instruments, Moby is and I believe will always remain a supreme sort of universal door when ones need to breathe ...

it's OK, nothing more....
HOW can you try to compare this with Joy Division / Echo & Bunnymen?

More than Moby itìs ..moody, I guess. There's a whole feel of misery throughout his latest album which you can appreciate in gloomy Autumn days, less in Summer.
