U2 set for Spider-Man show

Comments

The U2-endorsed Spider-man-musical, sorry, Spider-man-opera Turn Off The Dark is set to be one of the most spectacular ever, if we are to believe Bono and The Edge.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1, they enthused about the upcoming Broadway show, claiming that Evan Rachel Wood, who is playing Spider-man's object of desire, Mary Jane, is "the greatest actor of her generation". The show is set to open March 2010.

Sad news however, for those looking forward to seeing Spidey jump from building to bulding whilst singing in high falsetto. The Edge stated that "we made one rule for ourselves. That we would never have Spider-Man singing. A guy singing in tights can't happen."

Recent reports claimed that the spectacular musical/opera is suffering financial trouble, with producers struggling to acquire the $30m-$45m needed for its completion.

The show is expected to be one of the highest grossing Broadway shows in history, providing a much-needed boost to a Broadway that's been hit hard by the credit crunch.

Bono and The Edge, on their side, are not unfamiliar with superhero territory, with U2 providing the hit single to 1995's Batman Forever and The Edge providing the theme song for the two first seasons of kids cartoon show The Batman.

The show is directed by Julie Taymor and will according to Bono feature a female villain in addition to The Green Goblin. Like the role of Peter Parker/Spider-man, the actress portraying the female villain has not yet been announced.

  • I´ve always liked U2´s side projects and their work on this musical proves their open-mindedness about different styles of music again. This could be a great show. I love the idea of an artistic work that´s different from a traditional Broadway musical. U2´s music has always been about exploring the bounds of possibilities and finding new sorts of expression. So I think it´s an interesting challenge for Bono and The Edge to work on something that connects opera with rock´n´roll. Hopefully the financial problems will be solved.
