Sheffield-born Nic Dawson Kelly should, in all fairness, have grown up in the mid-west. America that is. For The Musician is a whistling-friendly whiskey stomp, so gloriously besotted with the southern states, it drips of tobacco and dust.
The deep-voiced country-folkster's uncanny resemblance to Anthony & The Johnsons limits itself to vocal style; his songs rather harmonica-led blues than piano-driven ballads.
And while naming Mississippi Fred McDowell, Son House and Blind Willie Mctell as influences among Bob Dylan and Tom Waits, Kelly's songs are always in progress, sketches of music that are altered for every live show.
The Musician is a glorious seasonal feel-good track, a soulful take on some of the finest blues-folk around, delivered by a talent clearly affected by his own music.
Nic Dawson Kelly's self-titled debut album is out on September 28 on The Runners Club.
