5 bands I love right now
There's an ad with a song called Creator by Santigold. It's a great record and I love that song particularly. I would say Black Moth Super Rainbow. I still love MGMT. When bands play festivals, you're reminded: oh, they're cool! Late Of The Pier - do people know them at all? They have a song called Space and the Woods, I don't know what they're about but I definitely listen to them on my iPod. And, some old junk that I never get tired of...I can't remember...the first song on Portishead's last record. That's wicked.
4 things you need to take on tour
I always try to take some coffee and a coffee maker, so you can just make it on the bus. You can't rely on the coffee you're going to get. When we're in town, the coffee on our bus is the best coffee in that town. There's a coffee house in Portland, Oregon called Stump Town. They send us coffee and it is some of the best in the world.
Obviously, my iPod - I have a yoga routine on there that I do every day. If you don't get up and stretch it's tough. The more I do it, the better it is on stage. When bands are young, they're looking for some thrill that isn't there. As you get older, you're thrills are in the show itself. You don't think, this is great but as soon as we get done we're going to go and party. We're older but feel better.
I bring my clothes! I have three or four suits that all smell to various degrees but they look good from a distance. [Indicates his well cut grey suit] This is a Burberry suit that I bought in London. Michelle, my wife, kind of customises them for me. The buttons are always boring so she replaces them for me.
I have some sunglasses that I've been able to carry for about three years now. These ones would cost $500 if you bought them. A guy in Dallas runs a hip clothing store and he thought some hip rich guy would want these glasses. Nobody did, so he just said to me, why don't you take them.
My iPhone is vital for talking to my wife. I've got that and an iPod because my wife bought a new iPod and gave me her old one. I don't really know how to make it work properly but still...
3 things that annoy me at festivals
It would be, being at a festival, it's the first day and the smell of vomit is already there. That's annoying. On the last day you expect it. I always hate it when groups backstage act like they're big stars. We were around Lil Kim last summer and everyone backstage had to get out of her way... even Neil Young! Why such a fuss?
Besides that it is always a bit annoying when it rains but I don't really think people care that much. I never care, if the audience is there, it's easy to rise above.
2 great things that happened to us this year
Two days ago we played with Coldplay in Barcelona. It's a great city to be paid to go to and party. And by coincidence we bumped in to Jackson Browne at the airport. He invited us to go to dinner with him and he was wonderful. So two in one day.
1 bit of festival advice
Our fans already know this and don't need someone to tell them. All these experiences are not necessarily about the group or the band, it's about you and your friends and what you make of it. The rain, the bad toilets are just part of it. Bad experiences are almost more universal than good ones. When it's muddy, people pull together. My advice is: create your own happiness.
