Speech Debelle wins the Mercury Prize 2009

Speech Debelle has triumphed to win the Mercury Prize 2009 for her album Speech Therapy.

She beat the bookies favourite Florence & The Machine aswell as La Roux to take the coveted award. It also means means second time unlucky for Bat For Lashes' Natasha Khan, nominated in a year where the shortlist included a strong female contingent.

Collecting the award from Jools Holland at London's Grosvenor Hotel a delighted Speech thanked her gran who was there along with supporters from her record label, Big Dada.
