Like the iron filings experiment of physics lessons past, hype has begun to magnetise around Three Trapped Tigers. Why? Because, as with Battles and Squarepusher before them, they effortlessly execute a paradox in sound that is as frantic as it is contemplative.
Here's the difference: The three-piece, classically trained instrumentalists, score and write all their material before their fingers go anywhere near something that resembles a fret-board.
Three Trapped Tigers' EP2 hurls itself through a cacophony of styles, sounds and instruments all cut, paste and pounded into a striking new shape. How the drummer can last a whole song is anyone's guess. Intertwined in the madness though, the song has a progressive and ambient nature that affords the finished work a depth and sense that it would otherwise lack.
Having already played with 65 Days of Static and Four Tet - who share their passion for genre-blending discombobulation - coupled with the aforementioned qualities, and you know they're doing something right.
EP2 is out 31 August
