Eight years on from Catatonia, it's third time around solo... so what does Cerys Matthews new album sound like? Who better to tell you than her in her own words:
Don't Look Down
It's Tracy Emin in sound, maybe not as visceral but that honest. I want music to make sense of that funny, sad, strong, weak, glorious, pathetic balance that is human existence. Otherwise there's no point. It would be easy to make cool sounding records, to be dark, to be all bass and no risk, or to make stripped down alt. country roots stuff till I grow a beard or wake with a stetson stuck to my head but I don't want to.
I want to keep trying to push myself to write the best songs, the strongest melodies, to try equal Ennio Morricone, Holland Dozier Holland, John Barry, Kris Kristofferson... the greats, you know, you have to try, every time you pick up a guitar, you have to try, and nothing else is really relevant.
So that's what I do with every album. and I did this with Don't Look Down. But it came naturally, - I wrote it quickly. It was my life at that point, now that's changed and the next album will be different.
And its the best album I've made, bar none.
