The Awards - The Gigs 2009: Biffy Clyro at HMV Forum, October 20.
Biffy Clyro played a blinding set last night as part of The Q Awards with Russian Standard Vodka - The Gigs.
The Scots launched straight into That Golden Rule, first single from current album, Only Revolutions, which saw the excited crowd launch into a mass eruption before being eased through to Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies.
Having talked to Q before the gig, Biffy, almost apologetically, mentioned that the setlist would consist mainly of new material, although their conception of 'old' evidently excluded previous album Puzzle, which, over the course of the evening, was played almost in its entirety.
With their second album on Warner-offshoot 14th Floor soon to be released, Biffy utilised last night's intimate setting to preview their skill of mastering the increasingly epic song structures that Only Revolutions is founded upon with a classic hard rock formula, and, in doing so, periodically tantalising a crowd, who, in all fairness, didn't know what to expect. At least not seeing Simon Neil smashing his microphone against his forehead during Love Has A Diameter. Ouch.
Their new songs were even now greeted with singalongs (the new album isn't out till November), and in The Captain, with its monosyllabic chant-friendly chorus, they may just have found The Anthem for next year's festivals.
Providing the many die-hard Biffy fans with two songs from their first two albums, 2002's Blackened Sky and 2003's The Vertigo Of Bliss, the trio showcased a series of new tracks during the extensive 90-minute concert, before a moving rendition of As Dust Dances was saved for the encore, and a bigger-than-ever-sounding Mountains closed the show. The night, irrevocably, belonged to the three slightly daft Scots.

Actually they didn't play anything from vertigo of bliss. They played a few from Blackened Sky and nothing from Ininity Land or Vertigo which is the usual these days. Few new songs 3 old songs all from same 1 and almost entire puzzle (wow thats diversity)
