On her debut single, the Terry Wogan-endorsed Essex-born songstress Leddra Chapman aims high.
Not only is the song accompanied by a snap-happy music video that would make any photographer consider poking their eyes out with a rusty spoon (I mean, do you know how much a Polaroid film costs?), but more importantly, the single is mighty ambitious.
For Marissa Jones and Michael Porter, former lovers and the protagonists of this admittedly straightforward tale of break-up and heartache are here portrayed over layers of some very clever structuring indeed.
With Chapman's voice on its side is certainly reminiscent of that of Imogen Heap, Story owes as much to the chart-bothering folk-pop of The Corrs as it does to the surrealistic word-jumbling of Regina Spektor.
The arrangements are deceptive and fascinating - inexplicable 'how-did-that-happen' tempo shifts almost frustratingly well composed - and while there's still some grounds to cover in Chapman's desire to be a modern, say, Joni Mitchell, she's undoubtedly a terrific songwriter who deserves a bigger audience.
Leddra Chapman's debut album Telling Tales is out this month.

Quality of the highest at a time when music is being stifled by conveyor belt marketing of average talent.
