Princeton (named after a street rather than the university) grew up in Santa Monica, California, forming during an academic year in London where they immersed themselves in the writings of Virginia Woolf and other members of the Bloomsbury set before moving back to California in 2007 and releasing an EP about them. This year they released debut album Cocoon Of Love.
Their music, like the witty, monochromatic video accompanying Calypso Gold, is brimming with 60's nostalgia - Sean Connery as James Bond very much present - adding sweeping strings and the afrobeat-referencing that has worked so well for sometime-touring partners Vampire Weekend to a backbeat of, well, calypso.
Clever in their presentation, their tanned, skinny jean sunny-day hook filled pop often inhabits a baroque-esque quality, a more sophisticated take on an age-old formula than that of their (albeit equally fascinating) East Coast peers, The Drums. It works, inexplicably, quite well too.
They may owe more to Arcade Fire than they would like to admit, but the familiar charm of Calypso Gold - one of their finest moments - is evidence of their immaculate ear for the immortal composition.
So take five and ease yourself into a Technicolor sunset with this irresistible slice of vintage pop.
Calypso Gold is out January 18.
