In This Light And On This Evening, the latest album from Editors marked a shift in their sound, away from more conventional guitar songs and structures. Produced by Flood, they changed direction and headed for more expansive territory.
A band that's always been interested in new music and avidly picks who goes on the road with them, they told us in 2006 how they'd been trying to find a way for The National to tour with them for over a year. So we wondered with the new direction and their keen musical tastes what they would pick as roots and influences on a playlist for us. Bassist Russell Leetch (pictured, second from left) rose to the challenge...

Etienne Jaumet - Mental Vortex
Instrumental eeriness. Sounds like the soundtrack to an unmade sci-fi movie made in 1979.
Spoon - The Mystery Zone
One of my favorite contemporary rock bands around. I wish the radio would play them more in the UK but at least this way they are treasured underground heroes.
Arcade Fire - Black Mirror
Can't wait for the new record like every other big music fan in the world. Great band.
Nirvana - Something in the way
'It's ok to eat fish, cause, they don't have any feelings..' I heard this when I was 12 and always thought that this rang true. I still agree with Kurt. It's a very heavy song.
Neu! - Spitzenqualitat
Have loved this tune and this record for some time. The influence is definitely shown in our track 'bricks and mortar' off our latest LP.
The Antlers - Bear
We have this band coming out with us on tour in the states. Can't wait to see them, the LP is a must have.
Nine Inch Nails - Closer
My mate flood produced this belter. It took me back to my last year of school when I loved everything rock. It's lasted the important test of time.
Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen (A Capella with the London Community Gospel Choir)
One of my favorite shows of all time was seeing Spirtualized at the Eden sessions in Cornwall. I know he has been touring this album and would love to see it performed in it's entirety.
Death in Vegas - Girls
I'm still on a jam/space trip so why not play this tune. Wonder if they'll ever release another record ?
The National - City Middle
My favorite band in the world today. 'I have weird memories of you, pissing in a sink I think...' I love 'getting' different lyrics on different listens. Still never bored of them and am glad they are becoming such a success.
