There's something fascinating about bands who drop unexpected elements into otherwise familiar pop songs.
Boston quintet The Hush Now have a few of those moments, most notably the absurdly placed operatic interlude that pierce through Hoping & Waiting, an otherwise unassuming guitar-led track in the spirit of Teenage Fanclub. And, as if to prove a point, they follow this momentary theatricality with a trumpet solo that could have been an outtake for Penny Lane.
Nice.
...which also can be said about their second album - released later this month - a charming compilation with mouthfuls of hazy sunshine and certainly other warm metaphors too.
Constellations is out February 23.
