Foals - Spanish Sahara

Oxford rockers Foals are famed for their intelligent musical outlook, taking on an unwitting indie scene with carefully crafted rhythmic assaults. All five members, four of which were Oxford graduates quit their degrees in order to pursue their ambition. This self confidence has not been misplaced. Debut album Antidotes, mastered by the group themselves, was a huge success, hitting the UK charts at number three and achieving gold status in the process.

After a long wait, Foals are back with a taster of their much anticipated second record. Spanish Sahara is an epic comeback, tantalisingly teasing listneners before releasing into an unrelenting shower of shattering guitar strings. Easing into action with the sombre vocals of front man Yannis Philippakis accompanied by the mellow pangs of Jimmy Smith's guitar, the song builds with the keys of Edwin Corngreave frantically building into a crescendo counted down by Jack Bevan's crisp drumming. "I'm the ghost at the back of your head," sings Yannis hauntingly.

Spanish Sahara emits a more spacious feel than the precise elements of Antidotes. Debut single This Orient is released on March 3rd before the album Total Life Forever can finally be purchased on May 10th. Foals are an articulate group with lots to say. Listen to them here.
