The Drums - Best Friend
When listening to The Drums it's easy to be transported into a parallel universe. Was Factory Records financially unviable? Did Ian Curtis really kill himself? Is the Hacienda now just a block of flats? Although the Tony Wilson era has passed, its influence lives on. This New York based four-piece provide a nostaligic trip back into the post-punk era, sounding like a light-hearted Joy Division.
Best Friend begins with a catchy base rhythm reminiscent of anything from Peter Hook's repertoire, accompanied by the muffled drums and echoed vocals akin to The Clash. All this is topped with a light sprinkle of synth, and the good vibrations of The Beach Boys.
The stripped down feel of The Drums is a breath of fresh air, welcomed at a time in which over production takes such prominence. The single is available from 29th March, with their debut album following on the 7th June. Populiarity seems to follow this group as they have already sold out a UK tour.
