One of Britain's most enduring folk musicians, Robyn Hitchcock launched his solo career after the demise of his band The Soft Boys in 1980. Often labelled as eccentric, he's nevertheless developed a large cult following in the last thirty years, partly due to his prolific output.
Ordinary Millionaire is from his recently released seventeenth studio album and is a haunting, poignant psychedelic swirl of Sixties-inspired sound. Co-written by and featuring ex-Smith and current Crib Johnny Marr on guitar - and once you know that, you can hear it's him - yet despite his presence and influence, the song still retains Hitchcock's very idiosyncratic trademarks, making it soothing yet disturbing, peaceful yet disquieting. That said, if any song is likely to tip Hitchcock into mainstream acceptance and make a larger audience embrace his quirkiness, this could well be the one.
Insidiously catchy despite its slightly odd, off-kilter nuances, it'll have you humming along before you realise you're even doing so. The striking and eye-catching stop-motion video is just as mesmerising.

Very charming - reminded me a lot of mid-60s R&B ballads - Syd Barrett, Colin Blunstone, Keith Richard - goes to shew good music is timeless. The video itself is amazing - well doen man behind the camera!

Second time I've heard this track. This time just now on the Radcliffe and Maconie show. Brilliant track. Can hear the signature guitar of Johnny Marr from the Smiths but love the California relaxed feel of Ordinary Millionaire.
