A hankering for Can and The Grateful Dead, plus an obsession with Dostoevsky - all revealed in The National's recommended reads.

Drummer Bryan Devendorf's favourite page-turners:
"Two excellent novels written about two of the greatest cities: New York and London, respectively."
Let The Great World Spin - Colum McCann
Capital - Maureen Duffy
Guitarist Bryce Dessner's literary obsessions include a bona fide classic and a contemporary contender:
Fyodor Dostoyevsky - The Idiot"This is my favorite Dostoyevsky novel. Lesser known than his epic Brothers Karamazov or Crime and Punishment, The Idiot is the romantic love novel. It's ridiculously good. My brother and I are so obsessed with Dostoyevsky we often name our song demos after him...the song Runaway off High Violet was originally called 'Karamazov."
The Road - Cormac McCarthyI haven't seen the movie yet but this book is devastating. It feels like a post-apocalyptic great American novel, maybe if Steinbeck were still alive he would write this kind of book now.
Bassist/guitarist Scott Devendorf gets musical:
Krautrock: Cosmic Rock and Its Legacy Black Dog Publishing
An encyclopedia of the late 60s-70s German "movement". Great, in-depth profiles of Can, Neu!, Cluster and many more. Amazing artwork chronicled here too!
Searching for the Sound: My Life with the Grateful Dead by Phil Lesh
"A true insider's view of one of the most important American bands of the 20th century. Funny, touching and even educational. NOT for fans only (though it certainly helps)."
